Green energy pioneer: Delta powers Europe's largest solar park with PV inverters
Text by EMEA 2024/08
Europe's largest solar park, the Witznitz Solar Park, was completed this year in Witznitz, Germany. The former Witznitz II open-cast lignite mine has been transformed into a huge 500-hectare solar park, an area equivalent to 700 football fields. Approximately 1.1 million solar modules and around 3,500 Delta PV inverters (M125HV model) work together to deliver a capacity of 650 megawatts of DC green power. In fact, the solar energy produced at Witznitz can meet the annual energy needs of 200,000 four-person households, demonstrating the plant's significant contribution to renewable energy generation. In addition, the project is estimated to reduce carbon emissions by more than 250,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year, significantly minimizing its environmental impact.

The Witznitz Solar Park was officially connected to the grid with a symbolic commissioning ceremony in July. The solar park was opened by Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer, who praised the project in his speech: "This is the largest solar park in Germany to be built here in central Germany. We are making the transition away from lignite and towards renewable energies. With strong partners, such investments are successful. We want to remain an industrialized country, and for that we need renewable energies.

The construction of a ground-mounted photovoltaic field requires more than just numerous solar panels to capture sunlight. Other key products are critical to converting solar energy into usable electricity. Among them is the PV inverter, which converts the DC power generated by the solar panels into AC power, the standard form of electricity used in homes and businesses, and feeds it into the grid.

Delta's Advanced Inverters Power a Large Solar Park, Showcasing Sustainable Energy
Delta's string inverters have proven essential in optimizing the performance of this expansive solar photovoltaic field, covering hundreds of hectares. Delta supplied approximately 3,500 high-voltage certified inverters, compliant with VDE-AR 4120/30 standards, to seamlessly integrate into the 380-kilovolt grid connection environment.

The Delta M125HV three-phase solar inverter boasts 99.1% peak efficiency and 98.7% EU efficiency, ensuring optimal energy conversion. Each inverter transmits operational data continuously to the control center, allowing comprehensive performance monitoring of the entire PV park at the level of individual inverters and even individual strings.
Around 3,500 Delta M125HV inverters are installed throughout the solar park.

The pursuit of green energy is an environmentally sustainable practice. The solar park was established on land designated for conservation, reflecting a commitment to maintaining a harmonious relationship with the surrounding environment. "The Witznitz Solar Park represents a significant achievement in the European energy transition and serves as an inspiring testament to the commitment to shaping a sustainable future," states Steffen Montag, Managing Director of MOVE ON Energy.
The extensive planting of hedges and trees has created new habitats for a variety of wildlife.

“An inverter with 99% efficiency results in significant energy savings and contributes to a more sustainable world. Projects of this scale represent a significant achievement for Delta, and we are honored to contribute to this initiative as a supplier," notes Andreas Hoischen, Senior Director and Head of Delta EMEA's PV Inverter Business.

Delta, renowned for its power electronics expertise, works closely with solar park operators and power grid operators to ensure seamless integration of solar inverters into the electrical grid. This expertise ensures smooth operation and reliable power generation for large-scale solar projects like the Witznitz Solar Park.
