SPECIAL REPORT
Delta Wujiang Plant 5 achieves dual certification as a Zero Carbon and Carbon Neutral Factory
Becoming the first 5-star Zero Carbon Factory in the electronics manufacturing industry in Jiangsu
Text by Shanghai Public Affairs 2023/10
With the global wave of energy conservation and carbon reduction, countries around the world have been implementing regulations such as carbon taxes and carbon emission standards. The manufacturing industry is highly focused on ways to reduce carbon emissions and implement energy-efficient measures in their factories. In this special report, we will show you how Wujiang Plant 5 uses its unique energy-saving and carbon reduction solutions to become a "Five-Star Zero Carbon Factory".

Delta's zero carbon factory responds to net-zero carbon emission targets
"Zero Carbon Factory" refers to a factory with a consolidated zero carbon emissions performance achieved through measures such as technical energy savings, emissions reductions, and carbon removal in the production and manufacturing process. However, the current construction of zero carbon factory worldwide is still in its infancy. Recently, Delta Electronics(Jiangsu)  Wujiang Plant 5 officially received the Five-Star Zero Carbon Factory (Type I) Certificate and PAS2060 Carbon Neutrality Achievement Verification Statement from TÜV SÜD Group (hereinafter referred to as TÜV SÜD), a global sub-tier supplier testing and certification organization. This achievement makes the company the first Zero Carbon Factory in the electronics manufacturing industry in Jiangsu Province.

Wujiang Plant 5 has met the evaluation requirements of the T/CECA-G 0171-2022 Zero Carbon Factory Evaluation Code issued by the China Energy Conservation Association with a total score of 91.2. It has achieved full points in 12 items, including autonomous emission reduction performance indicators, energy and carbon intelligent informationized management systems, ecological product design, and renewable energy utilization. As a result, it was designated as a Type I, Five-Star "Zero Carbon Factory". This is also the second authoritative certification Wujiang Plant has received in the energy conservation and carbon reduction field, following the title of "Green Factory" at the national level, which it received in 2019.

T/CECA-G 0171-2022 Zero Carbon Factory Evaluation Code is a group standard issued by the China Energy Conservation Association. It is the world's first comprehensive and quantifiable "Zero Carbon Factory" construction standard and evaluation guidelines. This standard clearly sets out the basic requirements, key processes and evaluation criteria for the construction of Zero Carbon Factories, providing methodological guidance for enterprises to establish Zero Carbon Factories and for sub-tier suppliers to conduct certification. PAS2060:2014 is an mainstream international standard for carbon neutrality certification published by the British Standards Institution. It outlines the specific processes and detailed requirements for achieving carbon neutrality. TÜV SÜD is a certification authority accredited by the EU, ISO and several international organizations for greenhouse gas emissions and emission reduction standards. It has extensive experience and professional qualifications in the field of corporate carbon neutralization.
Delta's Wujiang Plant 5 has been awarded the "Five-Star Zero-Carbon Factory" and achieved PAS2060 carbon neutrality certification by the China Energy Conservation Association. Mr. Zhou Feng (right), representing TÜV Süddeutschland Group, presented the certificate to Delta’s CEO, Mr. Ping Cheng (left).

In a recent statement, Chongmin Zhao, Director of TÜV Rheinland's Transportation Services Division in Greater China, said that the achievement of dual certifications of Zero Carbon Factory and Carbon Neutrality by Delta's Wujiang Plant No.5 is a significant milestone in its journey toward transformation and development of green-oriented energy transition. Under the global trend of green and low-carbon development, enterprises are emphasizing low-carbon and zero-carbonization as their primary focus for upgrading and transformation. Jesse Chou, Delta's Chief Sustainability Officer and Spokesperson, stated that awarding of the Five-Star Zero Carbon Factory is a major accomplishment in Delta's pursuit of achieving net-zero emissions. In the near future, Delta intends to replicate the carbon reduction experience gained from Wujiang Plant No.5 and establish more zero carbon factories globally. "

Utilizing its own energy-saving solutions,  promoting green and low-carbon intelligent factories
Wujiang Plant 5 employs its own energy management platform to control, analyze and optimize energy consumption. Additionally, it integrates industrial control products for technological transformation. The facility attained full points in 12 fields, including autonomous emission reduction performance indicators, energy and carbon intelligent information management systems, ecological product design, and renewable energy usage. The factory has implemented energy-efficient and carbon-reducing measures: building solar inverters and purchasing green power in the plant site, reducing greenhouse gas emissions within the plant, using the "Delta Energy Online" system to effectively manage energy and carbon emissions, and reducing the carbon footprint of products, etc. Specific measures include: Achieving 100% renewable energy utilization by implementing rooftop solar inverters for self-use, purchasing green power, and international renewable energy certificates, resulting in a total reduction of 778,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity consumption at the plant site;  Combining carbon offset measures to achieve a 54% absolute reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2021, reaching 100% carbon neutrality, and implementing AIoT technology to collect and manage energy and carbon information through smart meters. Furhtermore, in accordance with Delta Group's Product Carbon Footprint Strategy, the production of DC brushless motor cooling fans in the plant site strives to minimize the carbon footprint at each stage of the product life cycle, and has obtained ISO14067 product carbon footprint certification.

In terms of factory facilities, the factory has independently upgraded energy-efficient and low-carbon equipment, aligning with the concept of a zero-carbon factory. Buddy Yang, the plant manager of Delta Wujiang Plant 5, stated, "From 2011 to 2022, we’ve completed 115 energy-saving and carbon reduction projects. Facility improvements include the adoption of energy-efficient air compressors and vacuum pumps, the replacement of conventional motors with reluctance motors, and the upgrading of the high-energy-consuming SMT reflow soldering furnace to a new dual-track reflow soldering furnace, in conjunction with a central cooling water system, resulting in a remarkable 42% reduction in energy consumption. In the future, we will collaborate with more friendly factories to collectively promote green and low-carbon transformation, advancing towards sustainable operations."

In 2022, Delta's business branches in China generated 15.59 million kilowatt-hours of solar energy through the construction of rooftop solar panels, and purchased 81.33 million kilowatt-hours of green energy, resulting in a total reduction of 77,142 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. By promoting various energy conservation and carbon reduction measures, the annual target of reducing carbon emissions by 13.5% has been achieved in 2022. The proportion of renewable energy in its global offices has reached 63%, gradually moving toward the goal of using 100% renewable energy and achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, in order to contribute to the "Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality Goals" through practical measures.

Wujiang Plant 5’s rooftop solar has reached 1.6 megawatts, with an annual electricity generation of up to 1.65 million kilowatt-hours.
