SPECIAL REPORT
Delta's Americas headquarters becomes the first LEED Zero Energy-certified green building in Fremont
Text by DAL 2023/08
In 2021, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) reported that the building and construction industry accounts for 37% of global greenhouse gas emissions, reflecting that the development of green buildings is crucial for energy conservation and carbon reduction. Delta has built a total of 32 green buildings since 2006. Recently, the Americas headquarters (HQs) has once again been awarded, becoming the first green building in Fremont, California, and the second green building in the Silicon Valley Bay Area to pass the US Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED Zero Energy certification. This issue ‘s Special Report will introduce how the Americas HQs utilized innovative energy-saving solutions and products to achieve LEED Zero Energy certification.

From “Net Zero Energy” to “LEED Zero Energy”, progressing towards the new milestone of zero energy consumption
The USGBC has proposed a LEED Zero label guide for the net-zero certification of buildings in four key aspects of Energy, Carbon, Water and Waste. At present, there are less than a hundred developments in the world that have received LEED Zero emission building evaluation certification. The Delta Americas HQs obtained LEED Platinum certification in 2015, and through unceasing optimization of buildings, the team will continue to strive to obtain LEED Zero Energy certification in 2023.

Lily Mei, the Mayor of Fremont, commented, "Delta Americas regional HQs laid claim to being one of the earliest private sector LEED Platinum facilities in California. Today, Delta sets another milestone as only the second facility in the entire Bay Area to achieve LEED Zero-Energy." Delta has been practicing sustainability through technology and has continued to invest in the community even during the pandemic, turning its HQs into a verification field for energy-saving solutions.

"Fremont has been Delta’s home in the Americas for over 30 years, so it is an honor for us to contribute to our community with the environmental and social benefits of the city’s very first LEED Zero Energy green building." Kelvin Huang, President of Delta Electronics (Americas), said that since its completion in 2015, Delta's Americas HQs has been continuously optimizing and introducing its own innovative green solutions, such as addition of a new solar PV carport and energy storage system which generates over 1.4 million kWh of renewable electricity annually. This green energy output covers more than its consumption needs, in line with the LEED Zero Energy certification.
President of Delta Electronics (Americas), Kelvin Huang emphasized that with Delta Americas HQs achieving the milestone of net-zero, it will further bolster Delta to fulfill its promise to power worldwide operations with renewable electricity by 2030.

Integrating energy-saving solutions, Americas HQs become a beacon of sustainable development
Achieving the goal of zero energy consumption is challenging for many large commercial buildings, as more electricity consumption means more renewable energy is needed as replacement. On top of adhering to environmental protection concepts, the Americas HQs is designed to generate more than 1.4 million kWh of renewable electricity per year through the installation of a 504kW bi-facial PV carport system supported by high-efficiency PV inverters. The recent addition of a 330 kWh Deta energy storage system helps to optimize the use of renewable energy, fortify energy management in the facility and generate more electricity than the annual electricity consumption.

Commercial buildings require a large amount of information processing, and data centers face heat dissipation issues due to high computational efficiency requirements, making heat dissipation solutions crucial. The data center in the Americas HQs was equipped with an economizer supported by electronically commutated (EC) fans and variable frequency drives for HVAC applications, helping to lower the annual power usage effectiveness (PUE) of the data center from 1.5 originally to as low as 1.25.
Delta Americas HQs is designed to generate more than 1.4 million kWh of renewable electricity per year through the installation of a 504kW bi-facial PV carport system supported by high-efficiency PV inverters.

In terms of software, the Americas HQs introduced VTScada, which is a next-generation SCADA system developed by Trihedral, a Delta subsidiary, and enteliWEB building control platform developed by subsidiary Delta Controls. These platforms have high scalability and can be seamlessly integrated with existing building subsystems such as HVAC, LED lighting, and other energy-intensive applications to create set points, collect data, track trends, create reports, alert for anomalies, and remotely manage facilities, enabling instant visibility on facility usage, reduce unnecessary consumption, and reduce operating costs.
Facility maintenance technician can instantly monitor the operational status of various facilities through VTScada and enteliWEB.

For good measure, in response to the characteristics of the local climate and environment, the Americas HQs incorporated natural features, taking advantage of natural underground hot springs to create a ground source heat pump system embedded in the floor and ceiling to help maintain a stable and comfortable temperature for the building. LED lighting systems, coupled with intelligent controls, minimize energy waste, while EV charging piles, rainwater harvesting, and native plants showcase Delta walking the talk in sustainable development.

"I am repeatedly impressed by the conscientious effort and commitment Delta has put into maintaining our buildings to the most energy-efficient and highest environmentally green standards. Our buildings are equipped with the most cutting-edge technology. I am especially awed by our geothermal system for heating/cooling. Along with the automation of the Delta control units, we can efficiently provide heating and cooling to designated areas without wasting precious resources. It has been truly an awesome learning experience to work on this LEED Zero building," said Laurence Mu, Facility Maintenance Technician.

Delta sets a new benchmark for green buildings
"If you don't do it now, you will regret it in the future," said Founder Mr. Cheng, when he decided to invest in green buildings in 2006. Delta kept to its original intentions regardless it is self-built plants, academic donations or exhibition projects, etc. The relentless optimization of its headquarters in the Americas saw the addition of many of Delta's own energy-saving solutions on top of adopting design and construction methods of green buildings to create sustainable green buildings. This not only sets a new benchmark for green buildings, but also serves as the best demonstration of innovative energy conservation.
