Delta’s power shelves meet the high-efficiency demands of AI servers
Text by PSBG 2023/12

With the recent pop-ups of chatbots and art generators, AI generative content brings a new wave of demand for AI servers, resulting in the blooming of ultra-high power supply systems. Recently, Delta has developed the 120 kW power shelf and the latest Open Rack version 3 (ORV3) 1 OU 18 kW power shelves. The power self is now adopted by some world-class companies, and Delta is expecting to launch more advanced, high-power and energy-efficient server powers for AI fields in the near future.

High efficiency-Delta New 120 kW power shelf powers up AI servers
Delta launched the 120 kW power shelf, which consists of twenty-four 5 kW power supplies and boasts an impressive 97.5% power conversion efficiency to reduce unnecessary waste for AI servers. Delta developed the 120kW power shelf and 5kW power supply with self-drafting specifications and design that went ahead of the market.

The 120 kW power shelf was developed and designed to meet the customer's high-power requirements for AI applications. The development team upgraded the power supply within the rack to 5kW, incorporating an N+N redundant design to fulfill the customer's demand for high-power and stable operation in AI applications. This marks the market's first 5kW 50V power supply designed specifically for data centers.

The power shelf can also be customized into a 2N (two independent, mirrored power distribution systems, each encompassing twelve 5 kW power supplies) redundant power system with 60kW power output. During operation, both systems deliver power output at 50% load. When one system fails or any abnormalities (peak loads, spikes, or more) occur, the other will perform full-load mode to ensure the stable operation of AI servers. In addition, this power shelf conforms to the CANbus communication protocol to safely manage and control the power usage of AI servers — another way to reduce energy loss.

Delta’s new power shelf wit up to 120kW or 2N 60kW and 97.5% efficiency for AI servers.

Delta unveils the new ORV3 18 kW power shelf with 97.5% Efficiency for AI Servers
Delta launches the latest Open Rack version 3 (ORV3) 1 OU 18 kW power shelves. This high-efficiency 6-slot-chassis power shelf is specifically designed to enable substantial energy savings in AI servers. The power shelf adopts 3kW power supply units (PSU) that boast over 97.5% peak efficiency and can integrate the power management controller (PMC), with industry-leading PoE (Power over Ethernet) function, to enable smart power management in AI data centers.

To save energy consumption in data centers, an increasing number of them are now raising the power supply voltage to 50V to reduce unnecessary energy consumption in the power delivery process. The goal of ORV3 development is to encourage suppliers to adopt the same specifications when increasing the power supply voltage to 50V in data centers. This aims to lower construction costs, enabling the implementation not only in advanced data centers but also in general data centers. Additionally, the research and development team has designed a Power Management Controller (PMC) specifically for the ORV3 rack-mounted power supply. When the power supply operates at low loads, the PMC can automatically shut down certain power supply units, contributing to energy savings in the data center while tracking and monitoring power usage.

Delta’s 18 kW power shelf conforms to the Open Rack Standard V 3.0 busbar definition to address higher power density needs. It provides 48 / 50 VDC output voltage rather than the traditional 12 VDC to reduce electricity distribution losses. The power shelf offers a maximum 18 kW power output or 15 kW with 5+1 redundancy which accommodates six 3 kW hot-pluggable power supply units. Another highlight is the PMC with PoE function, which provides up to 1GbE Ethernet and allows PMC to work with the ORV3 power shelf for energy saving and optimal operational performance of data centers. In addition, both the power shelf and PMC can be customized in terms of hardware and firmware based on client demands to realize high energy efficiency for data centers.
